ROOFING IN AFRICAN HOUSING

All kinds of roofing structures are used in sub-Saharan African countries for construction of modern houses: asbestos-board, cement-board, galvanized iron sheet, aluminum plate, etc.

Galvanized iron sheets, imported mainly from Europe, are the most used of the above listed roofing systems

If houses are equipped with false ceilings, the negative aspects of galvanized iron-sheet roofing system (excessive heat from darting tropical sunray, deafening drumming noise of heavy equatorial rainfalls) are reduced to a bearable minimum.

But in African countries, false ceilings are luxury that developers cannot afford - particulary in rural areas and most town houses.

TAR-SATURATED CORRUGATED CARDBOARD

Other roofing systems exist which combine reasonable purchasing and installation prices with good isolation quality from heat and noise. One of these solutions is a roofing system made from tar-saturated corrugated cardboard

Tar-saturated corrugated cardboard is manufactured with waste paper, recycled cardboard, wood's off-cutsl, cloth trimmings and crushed sugarcane bagasse.

That is to say any available cellulose raw material which can be transformed into cardboard; saturated with oil tar and corrugated as galvanized iron-sheet. And painted in various colorful water-resistant shades.

This roofing system is worldwide known since 50 years and largely used in Europe and South America.

QUALITIES OF THE TAR-SATURATED CARDBOARD

Tar-saturated corrugated cardboard is rustproof, rot-proof, water-resistant, sea air-resistant. Roofing structures to carry these tar-saturated corrugated cardboard are far lighter (up to 5 time lighter) than those needed for other categories of roofing system above listed; this allow for lighter housing structures.

If roofing set-up instructions are strictly carried out, a roof made of tar-saturated corrugated cardboard is guaranteed for at least for 15 years

There is a huge market for tar-saturated corrugated cardboard roofing system in African countries. Potential market and investment's estimate are here available.
