| On August 11, 1999 at Cotonou, Republic of Benin, the representatives of the governments of Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo signed, with CHEVRON International, a historic Memorandum of Understanding which gives the green light, to CHEVRON International and its associates, to go ahead with the implementation of the development of the gigantic pipeline project inter linking and delivering natural gas to the national utilities companies of said countries. Participants to the signing ceremony included the ministers of energy from the four Western Africa countries, Mr. Lansana Kouyate, General Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); Calvin Humphrey, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy; Dick Matzke, a director of Chevron Corp. and president of Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc. (COPI); and George Kirkland, chairman and managing director of Chevron Nigeria Ltd. Initial information on this very important project was posted on businessafrica.net web site at the following link: /africabiz/ezine/wa/lightswaf.php "One of the most exciting aspects of this project," Matzke declared, "is that it ties together people, economies and nations to benefit the huge region of sub-Saharan Africa. It is our hope that the vision of unprecedented economic growth and enhanced stability resulting from the benefits created by this project can be realized." The pipeline, which is expected to cost (U.S.) $400 million, will initially ship about 120 million cubic feet of Nigerian gas per day for sale to power generation customers in Ghana, Togo and Benin. Volumes may double or triple over the life of the project as markets grow and existing industries convert to gas. There is no doubt that the implementation of the WAGP will open the door to numerous business opportunities in the ECOWAS area: http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/decdo/ecowas.php and particularly in Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. There are opportunities not to be missed to tap into the availability of abundant and cheap energy supply, low labor cost and a huge potential market of 150,000,000 consumers. During the coming months, AFRICABIZ will pinpoint business opportunities in the region banking on that energy availability. The participants in the international consortium are: Chevron Nigeria Ltd.; Ghana National Petroleum Corp.; Nigerian National Petroleum Corp.; The Shell Production Development Company of Nigeria Ltd.; Societe Beninoise de Gaz S. A.; and Societe Togolaise de Gaz S. A. Some information concerning these corporations may be gathered through the following links: http://www.africaonline.com It will be a good idea, for international investors to get in touch with said companies and explore with them business opportunities available right now and in the near future till the final completion of the project in year 2002.
