To troubleshoot jerky video/ DVD playback, we have to explore four lanes for solutions: (1) Detect what is (eventually) wrong with the graphic card; (2) Investigate CODECS (Compressing Decompressing Software) to see if the right (efficient) one is installed on the system; (3) Make sure that the right or latest Adobe Flash Media Player(s) update/ upgrade are installed, and (4) Verify that there is no memory-leak when playing videos.

Current issue deals with (possible) problems linked to Codecs installed on the system.

The subject had already been exposed in a previous delivery titled: Do You Have The Right Codecs?

CODECS? Compressing Decompressing Software, in plain English, are utilities that assist the DVD device and other media player /programs to smoothly read and play movies and video clips.

As stated in above linked delivery, one should avoid installing redundant Codecs, to minimize and or eliminate conflicts, and worsening the problem of jerky playback.

After installing several kinds of Codecs, we noticed that K-Lite brands are the best. They feature a tweaking tool that help spot and eliminate broken Codecs from the system. Indeed, Codecs can "break down" if one plays a CD / DVD that is not clean - that is scratched or full of dust. Links listed on previous delivery give access to K-Lite codecs packs.

However, videos' playback may still remain jerky after one performs tips and advises given in Part I and in this delivery. Therefore, further troubleshooting would be necessary to fine tune-up the system to smoothly playback videos and DVDs.

Next delivery (Issue 99/100 - July 15, 2007) will discuss Part III: Install Flash Player(s) and ActiveX According To Browsers and Video's Origins.

An important tip: When you do install K-Lite codecs, make sure that you perform the last step of the installing process, when the installation interface requires (1) Video decoder configuration and (2) Audio decoder configuration. Make some tweaking in the configuration panel link to each configuration if you know what you are doing. If not, if you are not a video geek, just click OK for both requested configuration. In case you do not do it during the installation process, you still have the opportunity to do so just after the installation process, performing the following sequence: Start/ K-Lite Codecs Pack / Configuration/ ffdshow/ Audio decoder Configuration and Video decoder configuration Forgetting to proceed as above advised, may result in jerky video / DVD playback even if you do have the right codecs installed! The K-Lite Codecs Pack has a couple of major advantages compared to other Codecs packs: - It it always up-to-date with the latest versions of the codecs. - It is very user-friendly and the installation is fully customizable, meaning that you can install only those components that you really want. - It has been very well tested, so that the package doesn't contain any conflicting codecs. - It is a very complete package, containing everything you need to play your movies. There are three versions of the K-Lite Codecs Pack: (1) Basic, (2) Standard and (3) Full. • K-Lite Codecs Pack Basic contains only the most essential things. It contains everything you need to be able to play the most popular and widespread formats. It is small enough to fit on a single floppy. Also great for including on your movie CDs. • K-Lite Codecs Pack Standard contains everything you need to play all the commonly used formats. This package should be enough for the average user. • K-Lite Codecs Pack Full contains even more codecs. It also has encoding support for the various formats. - DOWNLOAD MOVIES AT ROCKET SPEED WITH ORBIT DOWNLOADER

There are score of sites on the WWW that proposes movies and films to download. Some have proprietary software you should install for speedy download and decompressing of downloaded films and video. Many other propose download link - particularly for DivX videos and films that do not need decompressing.
