In
previous issue,
our column about "Control your desktop" showed
you how important it is to have a partitioned hard disk.
In this issue let's see together
how to use the partitions to make back-up of essentials
files and folders; in order to have a safety-net against
possible disaster.
PERFORM
BACK-UP WITHOUT ADDITIONAL DEVICE
I have three partitions on my system: C:/; D:/; E:/
- I presume that you have the same.
You can easily back-up files and
folders from one partition to the other without the
need of any additional hardware; you need only your
partitions and a dedicated software.
You may use Microsoft files manager - Microsoft-Explorer
- which comes with Windows 95/ 98 to perform drag and
drop of folders and files from C:/ to D:/ or E:/.
However, as you may have noticed, drag and drop is sometimes
tricky to perform using Explorer... It's better to use
Microsoft "PowerToys for Windows
95/98" which has - amongst other goodies
- the extended "Send to"
facility. With the Send-to command extension installed
it is really much easier to copy or move files from
one folder to another into another partition or inside
the same partition.
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows
95/98 is available
at this link.
A
VERY USEFUL FILES MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Of course, I do have Microsoft PowerToys for Windows
95/ 98 installed; but I prefer to use another nifty
program to manage my files and folders into and between
the partitions of my hard disk: WINDOWS
COMMANDER.
I agree 100% with the name. It's
not a usurped denomination. That program is really a
Windows Commander: a program which makes managing files
and folders in Windows a real child game!
It can display two panels of the same partition and
make drag and drop of file between two different folders
located in the same partition a easy task.
It features other goodies like a sophisticated FTP client
capable of direct server to server
transfer; a handy split program is available
to help you split large files into smaller ones for
storage on floppies or transfer over the Internet; the
same program rejoin the files on a fly.
With Windows Commander installed on your system, you
can compare and synchronize directories etc..It's a
must have; a real treat and I am sure that
you will ask yourself how you lived and survived without
it!
Ok! in few words I recommend it
to increase your productivity and perform "inter"
back-up of your system.
You may download a trial copy at the following link:
WINDOWS
COMMANDER.
In AFRICABIZ next
issue, we will see which essential files and folders
you need to absolutely back-up - "inter back-up
or back-up without additional hardware" - to be
in the position - in case of unexpected crash or nasty
bugs occurrence- to perform a serene restoration of
your valuable data and files.
