We have several times stressed out to you the
absolute necessity to have a personal Firewall
installed on your desktop or portable computer.

However we discovered incidentally that ZoneAlarm
may impede your connection to the net. For
the following reasons:
1- If you have a broadband or so called
fast Internet connection such as ADSL when installing
ZoneAlarm, the software configures your Fast Ethernet
PCI Bus Card by installing proper drivers; it
does the same with your ADSL modem port and the
PPP Adapter of your system. During the last process
it takes on TCP /TCI port which is normally used
to connect through "low speed" modems.
2- If for some reason or another (if your
broadband / ADSL provider is experiencing some
gateway troubles for instance, which makes it
difficult for you to connect to the net) you are
obliged to reverse to simple modem connection,
you will find it difficult to go online if ZoneAlarm
is loaded and running. Your "normal"
slow modem cannot then access the TCP / TCI port
and the connection to the net won't be successful.
3-We found this out when trying to
use CompuServe Dial Up to reach the net because
of temporary trouble with our ADSL / ISP provider.
The connection succeeded only after we shut down
ZoneAlarm and exist it from the system tray.
4- Once the connection established you
may load ZoneAlarm again to avoid trojan horses
and similar disrupting programs entering your
system as here
extensively explained.
