MIGRATION
TO A NEW COMPUTER
When
you get a new desktop computer or a portable your
desire is to have most if not all of your previous
operating system' settings to be similar on the
new one. You certainly also want to have all your
essential files, folders and bookmarks transferred
from the old computer to the new one.
Migrating settings and folders from one computer
to another was a nigphpare; performed only by
seasoned techies let's say two to three years
ago. Nowadays performing such transfer is easier
than ever; and you have many alternatives to choose
from.
Let's
begin with the simple files / folders' transfer
I have here
introduced to you a very useful utility called
WINDOWS COMMANDER and refer to it several
times (23)
in "Control Your Desktop" successive
deliveries. WINDOWS COMMANDER from ghisler.com
features in a single small package (more or less
1 MB): a- a more user friendly replacement
to Windows Explore b- a FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) device matching the most sophisticated
ones like WS-FTP from ipswtch.com; capable of
performing server to server files transfer c-
A packing / unpacking performer similar to WINZIP
from winzip.com; d- Files splitting and
recombination device d- Port connection
device to link one computer to another one.
The last above named device: "Port
connection device to link one computer to another"
is the one which helps transferring files and
folders between two computers as follows:
|
With a diskette Copy
/ Install WINDOWS COMMANDER'S folder
to the second computer - your License
included. (If necessary upgrade to
the latest version before - Click
here for more)
Power off both computers
and connect them through the Printer Parallel
Port (most of the time LPT1) - with a
NULL MODEM connecting cable (25 pins'
male connecting-heads)
Power on both computers
and fire up WINDOWS COMMANDER on both.
On the old computer's
WINDOWS COMMANDER choose a-"Commands"
b- "Port connection to
other PC" and c- "Server".
On new computer's WINDOWS
COMMANDER repeat a - b- and c -"Client".
You will see a panel
appearing on new computer's WINDOWS COMMANDER
representing partitions of old computer's
WINDOWS COMMANDER.
You just need to drag
and drop selected files from above
mentioned old computer's panel to the
new destination / partition on new computer's
WINDOWS COMMANDER.
|
The same files / folder
transfer procedure is possible through USB port.
The technology is provided by NET-LinQ of Parallel
Technologies Inc. Click
here for their website. Net-LinQ has an advantage
vis-à-vis WINDOWS COMMANDER; namely the
possibility to network the new and old computers
to share Printer, Modem and other hardware; crisscross
transfer files / folders, and synchronize folder's
content.
Let's
consider now the more sophisticated migration
of operating system and applications configurations
/ settings
I have identified two software which perform complete
migration of your old settings and configurations
to the new computer.
One is called DesktopDNA from Miramar.com
and the other one Personality TranXport
from Tranxition.com
Both will cost you something in the range of 40-49
bucks for a single user.
Personally
I avoided buying a new hardware / software by
sticking to my WINDOWS COMMANDER since I have
taken the precaution to keep all shareware / applications
/ initial and updated released in a folder of
D:\ or E:\ partitions as here
exposed. I then transferred all these applications
/ files to the new computer as above explained
with WINDOWS COMMANDER and subsequently made
clean install. That way I avoided transferring
Windows Registry blotted with left over files
from deleted applications. My Mail System (Microsoft
Outlook) settings and Inbox additional folders
are easily duplicated with visto agent
from visto.com
WINDOWS
XP / WHISTLER IS COMING
To address the migration's problems Microsoft
has included a new utility in the soon to be released
Windows XP (A merger of Window 2000 and Windows
ME). The utility is named "Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard". It is capable
of smoothly moving most commonly used settings,
such as bookmarks, Word documents, wallpaper,
and more from your old computer to your new one.
On the new machine, you run the wizard and select
the transferring mode for the files. The wizard
can act automatically and requires only that you
do not operate another application on both computers
till the transfer is terminated.
Windows XP is right now available for download
at a bargain price as Beta 2 release at the following
link www.microsoft.com/ products/ download/.
If you have currently anything less than RAM 128
MB; CPU 400 MHz and 4 MB free hard disk space,
do not try to run WINDOWS XP on it, unless you
want to meet trouble half way.
