Few
days ago I updated a desktop utility and reboot my system which hang-up with the
fatal error blue screen: Windows 98 cannot load. What happens? Few minutes
ago everything was fine and now...everything is wrong! A little "brainstorming"
make me diagnose the trouble: the new updated software was conflicting with an
existing one which cannot load and is blocking the whole system.
When
you run into a trouble of the kind, what is the troubleshooting path?
First of all try to diagnose; then try to start the system in "Safe Mode"
and remove the new updated software or existing conflicting one. I chose to remove
the updated utility.
When you start your computer in Safe Mode, Windows
loads only the strict minimum of drivers and hardware devices, so that you can
examine and isolate problems with greater accuracy.
To start in Safe
Mode:
1.
Shut down and 2. restart
your computer; hold down the Ctrl key as Windows loads (if you are running
Windows 98) or hit F8 (if you are running Windows 95). 3. You are presented
with a choose of "startup mode". 4. Select to start in Safe Mode.
5. Safe Mode displays your screen in 640 x 480 resolution. 6. Click
"Start" and choose: a) "Settings" and then b) Control
Panel. 7. At Control Panel screen choose "Add Remove Software".
9. At Add Remove Software screen a) highlight the conflicting software b) and
hit "Remove" and you are done. 10. Restart and Windows should properly
load.
If you have gone through the disaster of reinstalling
your operating system - without the security of a back-up of your data and files
- you are sure to loose all your bookmarks / favorite sites gathered over long
period of surfing the Internet. That may be annoying depending of what your bookmarks
are.
If the case above outlined doesn't apply to you yet, you've been
maybe in situation - traveling for instance - when you need to be have access
to these bookmarks.
Now whatever is the situation, you have the possibility
to "salvage" and have access anytime, anywhere to your valuable bookmarks.
