In
AFRICABIZ
previous issue, our
column about "Control your desktop" showed you which
important folders / files to back-up in particular using WINDOWS
COMMANDER and the extended "send to" facility of Microsoft "PowerToys
for Windows 95/98" in order to have a safety-net against possible disaster.
We follow-up in this
issue on how to prepare for "restore/recovery" and discussed about
the difference between the "Start-up" disks of Windows 95 and Windows
98. If
you are running Windows 98, the modus operandi is quite simple.
Let us assume you
can't start Windows 98; and you have to reinstall it using the installation CD.
Proceed
like this: -
Turn
the system off - Insert
your Windows 98 "Start-Up" floppy disk in your A:\ drive
- Power
on back your system
- A
list of startup options appears
- Select
"Start Computer With CD-ROM Support"
- Then press
Enter.
- Then
the A:\ prompt appears, insert the Windows 98 installation CD in your CD-ROM drive
and type X:\setup where X is your CD-ROM drive depending on how many partitions
you have on your hard drive. For example, if you have three partitions C:\; D:\
and E:\ your CD-ROM drive is F, so you should type F:\setup
If
you are still running Windows 95,
the modus operandi is a bit complicated and you need to be comfortable with all
the intricacies of your operating system to be able to successfully handle the
reinstallation of the Windows 95 from the CD-ROM drive. It
is better for the average computer user to hand the Windows 95 Start-up floppy
disk (with its CD-ROM drivers installed as explained in AFRICABIZ last
issue) to a repair shop and have the job done properly.
I prefer not
to communicate the process of self reinstallation online. If you are really interested,
please get in touch and I'll send you
a special mail. TOP
